Her family exerted enormous pressure on her to return
to Islam by kidnapping her daughters.
Zulfitri’s dream changed her life. In her dream, Isa (the Arabic name for Jesus) revealed Himself to her and as a result, a deep longing to learn more about him took hold in her heart. She knew Isa was mentioned in the Qur’an as a prophet. Obviously, he was worth studying. She had also heard much about Christians who followed this Jesus.
Zulfitri began attending a church to understand what her dream meant. She knew her parents and family would be angry and distraught at her decision. They were devout Muslims who lived in Aceh Province, the only province ruled by Sharia (Islamic law) in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, Indonesia.
DOING THE UNTHINKABLE – KIDNAPPING CHILDREN
After attending church for some time, she did the unthinkable – she accepted Christ into her life and was water baptized in Medan where there is a large Christian community. As a result she moved with her two adolescent daughters to Medan to work.
When her family learned of her becoming a Christian, they exerted enormous pressure on her to return to Islam and her home in Aceh. Each time they approached Zulfitri they heard the same response, “I’m happy to be a Christian and no I’m not moving back”. In desperation, her family abducted Zulfitri’s two daughters and took them back to Aceh with plans to send the girls to an Islamic boarding school.
To make matters worse, the family also encouraged a group of Muslim men to force Zulfitri, who is now married to a Christian man, to return to Aceh. Their attempts thankfully failed.
