Through our AsiaLink network we are presently in a position to help victims in the following four locations: Aceh, Indonesia; Phuket, Thailand; Sri Lanka; and southern India with: clean water, food, burial, clothing, masks/gloves to collect the bodies, body bags, medicine, tents, blankets, etc..

One young teenage girl 12-14 years of age symbolizes the situation for so many of the survivors. She lost her parents and all her family members when the tsunami destroyed her village. When the media arrived to take pictures of the destruction all they could do was listen to her as she pleaded with them, “Please save me. I have nothing!”

God has given us the opportunity to be not only His ears hearing what has happened but also to be His hands and His feet to the many thousands like this young girl who have lost family members and all their earthly possessions.

Will you help at this critical moment by being the hands of Jesus and sending your best gift for the relief efforts?  Already our medical teams and pastoral workers are on the ground reaching out to the injured but they need your financial support to provide the water, food, clothing, etc. that is so desperately needed. Thank you for responding with the love of Jesus!

Those best placed to help are our Malaysian representatives who are already co-ordinating efforts in Aceh, Indonesia. 150 Christian medics and volunteers from the Indonesian capital Jakarta are already there. The process is one of rescue, relief and then rehabilitation.  Funds are absolutely essential. Prayer is critical at all levels. If you you would like to go and help, there are opportunities for that too but at the moment we are only recommending teams that consist of construction, medical and/or pastoral care workers.

The financial needs are vast, please help as the Holy Spirit speaks to you.

Our representatives wrote, “ Please don't be put off from extending help because of the millions of dollars coming in from governments, etc. The need is more than just containers of supplies... Only the Body of Christ is empowered to minister healing and peace and comfort. It is more than throwing bottled water from moving trucks. It is about sitting down with a mother who has lost her husband and children…and praying with her...and helping to put the bottle of water on her lips and nourish her”

Additional Relief Project Information

1. General background information on the situation, which has led to the requested support

Earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter Scale causing massive tsunami tidal wave devastating coastal areas of the Indian Ocean. In Aceh at the northern end of the island of Sumatra it over 70,000 have perished and this may reach as high as 100,000. More than 100,000 others are injured and 500,000 displaced. At this present time the victims are still lying in the streets, gutters, fields, beaches. Survivors are lacking food, water, sanitation, shelter, blankets, clothing and medical care. The whole coastal region of Aceh is the affected area.

2. How many families/people have or are likely to be affected by the emergency situation in the area, where you want to offer assistance?

It is estimated that in the immediate vicinity of the affected area about 100,000 families need emergency aid.

3. Most urgent humanitarian needs to be covered

Most urgent needs are: shelter, blankets, food, clean water, medical and pastoral care for the traumatized.

4. Target group(s) for the relief activities planned

The immediate target areas are the city of Banda Aceh , Lhoksemawe and Nias, It is difficult to quantify as we wish to assist as many as is possible with the funds received, but the initial target is to assist 1000 families.

5. Relief activities to be undertaken

We already have sent two medical teams with 50 medical and pastoral workers and have our staff on the ground coordinating the building of a refugee camp with tents, medical centre, sanitation areas, food distribution and counselling.

6. Implementation of the planned relief activities

As we are already registered with local authorities, we have the full support of the local government. Our aid effort is being backed by the Indonesian Council of Reformed Churches, the Council of Evangelical Churches and the National Pentecostal Council. A combined Relief Council has been formed to determine priorities and to provide additional communication support to the highest levels of Government to ensure that the aid gets through. Our staff on location are directly handling distribution to eliminate mishandling of aid. Today a chartered Hercules Aircraft brought emergency food and medical supplies provided by various Churches and Christian Foundations, and we plan to bring in a second shipment in two days time. These initial supplies will only begin the effort and need to be supplemented by external aid as internal sources are being stretched to the limit.

7. Estimated implementation period

The implementation period for the emergency relief is one month to be followed by restorative relief over the following two months. All of the aid mentioned below will be used in the first month period of this three month period. Beyond that long term planning will be needed.

8. Measures which could be taken to help to strengthen local capacity to respond to future emergency situations and increase preparedness in areas often hidden by natural disasters

After the initial emergency phase, additional support will be needed for three main areas: trauma counselling, empowerment to return to work and construction of homes. Government and International Aid (UN etc) will take the major part of that burden but it will take the full efforts of all NGO's and Churches over the following 3 months to implement the most basic elements of restoring the community.

An international Indian Ocean tsunami center is being established through the agency of the Australian Government in conjunction with Indian Ocean Rim Countries to ensure this tragic loss of life does not happen again.

9. Risk factors which could delay, disturb or make the implementation of the planned relief activities impossible.

Aceh is a current conflict zone in Indonesia and there is some concern that the separatist Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) may seek to take advantage of the situation, however the extent of the humanitarian disaster is so great, the needs of the survivors outweighs these concerns. The greatest environmental factor is the health risks caused by decaying bodies and other material if we delay in dealing with the situation. Water contamination through sea water and decaying matter is another concern.
